SUN, SAND & PIGS
While in Koh Samui I visited the popular “Pig Island.” This is a small island that is filled with pigs! Pig Island is originally an island called Koh Madsum.
My last day in Koh Samui, Thailand I wanted to do something fun and rememberable before returning home to the rainy UK. I had met other travellers, and they had told me about their experience at Koh Madsum and they said it was not to miss. On my last day I decided to visit, and it did not disappoint. After a quick 15-minute boat ride from Koh Samui I had arrived at Koh Madsum. When getting off the boat I was greeted by lots of pigs. Koh Madsum is an island filled with pigs and surrounded by beautiful clear waters. While on the island I chilled at the beach, had some drinks from the bar, and got to feed the pigs. There were so many pigs some young, cute, and small and others old and huge. The pigs were not aggressive; they were simply curious and friendly. The pigs roamed freely on their own and interacted with humans if they wished. However, if you had food the pigs wanted to be your best friend. It was so wholesome to see these pigs living so happy after hearing their story. This was a perfect way to end my month-long trip in Thailand.
A local man named Mr Kitt was at a market in Surat Thani and had come across 2 pigs and 2 piglets for sale. He decided to buy the pigs and piglets as they seemed distressed and wanted to rescue them from a terrible fate. He had then taken the pigs to the island, Koh Madsum to live. On the island the pigs thrived and multiplied over the years, and Koh Madsum is now home to over 100 pigs. The pigs are friendly and roam the island freely. Mr Kitt owns a bar on the island of Koh Madsum and he has partnered with tour operators to help provide and care for the pigs. Now the island is now a popular destination for tourists to visit!
Visitors travel by boat from the island Koh Samui. However, there is options on the boat trip. One choice is a private boat that can take you directly from Koh Samui to Pig Island. You can also add in snorkelling to this option if you wish. The other choice is a shared boat trip that is from 9am – 2pm that includes transport to and from the pier, snorkelling and a meal at Pig Island. I picked the choice of the private boat straight to Pig Island, as I had already done a boat trip that included snorkelling at Phi Phi. I would recommend the snorkelling as it is an unbelievable experience. For the private tour you should make your own way to the pier in Koh Samui called Thong Krut, here you will find boatmen and tour operators who will take you to Pig Island.
